Coral Reef Conservation, Coral Reef Management, Deep Sea Corals, Management, Marine Ecosystem Management, Workshop Report, Information Management, Data Management

The workshop was designed to support the development of a NOAA Deep-Sea Coral Information Management Plan and the implementation of NOAA’s Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program. The Information Management Plan will develop a system for managing new and existing information to enhance access to deep-sea coral data as well as meet the provisions of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act Section 408: Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program.

The report, prepared by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in consultation with the Regional Fishery Management Councils, summarizes activities initiated with fiscal year 2009 Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program funding. It also briefly summarizes critical, complementary activities by other NOAA programs to support exploration, research and management of deep-sea coral ecosystems that have taken place since the first Report to Congress was submitted in 2008.

On July 7-8, 2009, scientists and resource managers met in Wilmington, North Carolina to further
define the exploration and research priorities laid out in the NOAA Strategic Plan for Deep-Sea Coral
and Sponge Ecosystems, and to identify critical information needs for deep-sea coral and sponge
ecosystems in the U.S. South Atlantic. The ultimate goal of the workshop was to identify steps to
improve the understanding, conservation, and management of these ecosystems.

Scientists, managers, representatives of the coral fishery and manufacturing industries, policy makers, and environmental organizations from Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America attended the workshop. The workshop provided an opportunity to discuss the best available science on the natural history of Mediterranean red coral (Corallium rubrum L.) and how it is managed throughout the region and utilized around the world.

The following information includes a brief summary of what is known about the harvest, trade, and
population status of Corallium. This is followed by an overview of recent activities undertaken to
conserve these species through CITES, and the rationale for technical workshops on Corallium.

Here, we construct a megafaunal inventory for Davidson Seamount off the central California coast based on six expeditions and over 60000 faunal observations. Utilizing additional data collected over the past 25 years by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute combined with a survey of the literature, we assess the current rates of endemicity and biogeographic ranges for the megafaunal assemblage occurring on this seamount.

In addition to detailing the status of the nation's living marine resources, this report also focuses on the steps that NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service has taken to end overfishing and reduce bycatch, and spotlights what is known and what still remains unknown about fishery stocks and protected resources.
